So you've just adopted a dog or puppy and your not sure about dog crates. You may want to crate your dog for several reasons. First, It keeps any bad behavoir, destructive tendencies or bathroom accidents, contained.  Putting your dog in the kennel or crate is not best used as a punishment. In fact, the confined space of a 
wire or fabric crate gives your pet a sense of security the same way wild animals go into dens. An indoor dog house or crate can be used in potty training for puppies.  Try to limit time in the dog crate to 4 hours or less. While in their "den"  they are LESS likely to use their sleeping space as a bathroom. When you let them out of the crate, bring the new puppy immediately outside to train (him or her) where the bathroom is. If your dog tends to get bored and become destructive when you are not home, keep your dog in the crate with a toy or two to keep them occupied. A wire or solid plastic crates are the most durable.  Most wire dog kennels will fold rather easily shoud you need to move to another room or take then traveling. A fold up soft sided fabric crate will work fine if your dog is past the chewing stage.
